WWEELab (Water Waste Energy Environment Laboratory) is a research group at the Marche Polytechnic University

dedicated to developing innovative and interdisciplinary solutions for the sustainable management of water and energy resources.

Prof. Francesco Fatone, PhD

WWEELab Coordinator,
IWA Fellow and Water Europe Ambassador

Francesco Fatone is a Full Professor of Chemical-Environmental Engineering at the Marche Polytechnic University and Coordinator of the WWEELab (Water Waste Energy Environment Laboratory) research laboratory.

Recognized as an IWA Fellow and Water Europe Ambassador, he is among the leading international figures in the fields of circular economy, bioeconomy, and the sustainable management of water and energy resources.

His scientific activity focuses on the development of advanced environmental technologies, the optimization of wastewater treatment processes, nutrient and energy recovery, and the design of circular solutions for the industrial-water sector.

He is coordinator and partner of numerous European Horizon and LIFE projects, author of over 300 international scientific publications, and invited speaker at prestigious conferences worldwide.

Through his work, he promotes synergy between academic research, industry, and society, with the aim of accelerating the ecological transition and sustainable development.

Prof. Anna Laura Eusebi, PhD

Technical Director of WWEELab UNIVPM

Anna Laura Eusebi is an Associate Professor of Sanitary and Environmental Engineering at the Marche Polytechnic University and holds the role of Technical Director of the WWEELab (Water Waste Energy Environment Laboratory).

Her research focuses on the development and optimization of innovative technologies for wastewater treatment, resource recovery and reuse, and the application of circular and sustainable solutions in the water and environmental sector.

She is involved as a scientific lead and partner in numerous European Horizon and LIFE projects, with a particular focus on the validation of processes at pilot and industrial scales.

She is the author of over 100 international scientific publications with more than 2,000 citations, testifying to the relevance and impact of her work in the scientific community.

Her approach integrates academic research and practical applications, promoting dialogue between universities, businesses, and institutions to support the ecological transition and circular economy.

Prof. Massimiliano Sgroi, PhD

Associate Professor UNIVPM

Massimiliano Sgroi is an Associate Professor of Sanitary and Environmental Engineering at the Marche Polytechnic University.

He earned his PhD in Environmental Engineering from the University of Catania and was a Visiting Scholar at the University of Arizona | BIO5 Institute (USA), gaining solid international experience in the water and wastewater treatment sector.

He is the author of 37 scientific publications indexed in SCOPUS, with over 2,800 citations and an H-index of 22, testifying to a globally recognized scientific impact.

His research activity lies at the intersection of water treatment and reuse, resource recovery from waste, energy, environmental assessment, and the removal of emerging contaminants, with a particular focus on PFAS. He is actively involved in numerous European research projects, including AquaSPICE, ULTIMATE, PROMISCES, DWC, SEACURE, and WATERUN.

He has developed advanced skills in the use of digital systems for water quality monitoring, the development of spectroscopic parameters for real-time control of micropollutants, and risk assessment in the water sector, contributing to the development of innovative solutions for sustainable and safe water resource management.
