\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tONE EARTH | Virtuous land-sea-land cycle: exploitation of residual animal biomass for an integrated land-sea circular economy\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\tThe ONE EARTH project valorizes residual animal biomass through integrated biotechnological processes, with the objective of developing circular value chains that connect terrestrial and marine production systems. The approach transforms organic waste into high-value-added products for aquaculture, agriculture, cosmetics, and biobased material production, reducing dependence on virgin raw materials and minimizing emissions associated with waste management. UNIVPM contributes to the development and optimization of biological processes for the production of volatile fatty acids from organic waste, with subsequent valorization of the lipid fraction through oleaginous microbial biomass. Activities span laboratory scale and progressive scale-up toward pilot systems, with integration of advanced monitoring instrumentation for process control and performance validation. \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSEACURE | Innovative solutions to reduce nutrient pollution in the Mediterranean\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\tThe SEACURE project aims to demonstrate, scale, and replicate effective innovations for the prevention and reduction of nutrient pollution in the Mediterranean Sea basin, in alignment with the innovation ecosystem promoted by Mediterranean Lighthouse projects and in connection with regional living labs dedicated to soil health. The project focuses its activities on the transfer and scaling of nutrient management strategies aimed at reducing soil pollution, limiting fertilizer use, and preventing, minimizing, and remediating contamination of freshwater and marine ecosystems. UNIVPM contributes to activities on the Italian case study of the Esino River, characterized by chemical and ecological criticalities due to combined sewer overflows and agricultural runoff. In collaboration with VIVA Servizi and with public and private territorial stakeholders, the University participates in testing a portfolio of solutions at the wastewater treatment plant level to improve pollutant removal and maximize water reuse for irrigation and fertigation. The project also involves WWF to test wastewater reuse in agricultural crops and for the recharge of natural lagoons. \n\t\t\t\t\t\tCARDIMED develops an operational framework to strengthen climate resilience in the Mediterranean biogeographical region, connecting regions, communities, and territorial actors through digital infrastructures and advanced tools for the assessment of Nature-Based Solutions. The project integrates data collection and harmonization, digital tools for citizen participation, capacity-building pathways, and holistic models based on the water-energy-food-ecosystems nexus, with the objective of systematically addressing socio-ecological challenges and accelerating the diffusion of nature-based solutions. UNIVPM provides specific expertise on NBS applied to resilient and sustainable agriculture, advanced wastewater treatment and safe water reuse, as well as sustainable aquaculture. The University leads DEMO 3, dedicated to the decarbonization of agricultural practices and combating agricultural pollution in Sardinia. In this context, Nature-Based Solutions are integrated with renewable energy systems with the objective of achieving energy neutrality for the demonstrator. The initiative aims to improve efficiency in treated water distribution and optimize agricultural irrigation in the Sardinian community. Furthermore, the project promotes the sustainable reintegration of water used in agriculture into surface water bodies, contributing to greater environmental sustainability in the Calich lagoon basin. \n\t\t\t\t\t\tAIMPRESS aims to modernize ports in the Adriatic-Ionian area through the integration of artificial intelligence-driven systems and renewable energy solutions, with the objective of reducing emissions and increasing the energy efficiency of port infrastructures. The project supports European decarbonization objectives, transforming ports into intelligent, economically sustainable hubs with lower environmental impact. UNIVPM contributes specifically to environmental assessment activities and decarbonization strategies, supporting the design and evaluation of clean energy solutions for the port context, including cold ironing systems and integration of renewable sources. The University is also engaged in capacity-building activities aimed at stakeholders involved in port management, to promote greater awareness of sustainable operations and circular approaches. Key technologies considered by the project include AI-based energy management systems, digital shadow tools to simulate and optimize port operations, shore power electrification systems, and solutions for energy storage and management. \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCSS BOOST | Development of circular systemic solutions and virtual circular economy spaces to overcome technological and operational barriers and accelerate circular transition in European territories\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\tCSSBOOST intends to overcome the main technological and non-technological barriers that hinder the diffusion of the circular economy, reducing the application and operational risks of Circular Systemic Solutions and promoting circular and bioeconomic transition in European cities, regions, and territorial systems. The project promotes an integrated approach based on virtual circular economy spaces and intersectoral value chains to make the developed solutions replicable and scalable. UNIVPM is the scientific coordinator of Pilot 2, dedicated to water reuse and nutrient recovery in the Marche region. The case study concerns the peri-urban area of the Municipality of San Benedetto del Tronto, a territory characterized by the presence of a nature reserve, agricultural and agro-industrial activities, urban uses, and strong seasonal pressures related to tourism. In this context, the project aims to build and support two value chains connected to water reuse and nutrient recovery, involving sectors such as water, agriculture, industry, energy, ecosystem services, and the urban-rural environment. \n\t\t\t\t\t\tLIFE TURBINES aims to promote the development of smart cities and the decarbonization of drinking water distribution systems, contributing to European 2050 objectives, the Green Deal, and the REPowerEU plan. The project focuses on hydroelectric energy generation by exploiting excess pressure occurring in urban water supply networks, transforming water into a renewable source capable of producing electricity without compromising service. UNIVPM is involved in several work packages and project activities. In particular, it contributes to WP4 dedicated to impact monitoring and indicator assessment, supporting the estimation of territorial effects of LIFE TURBINES solutions in terms of hydraulic and energy efficiency and carbon footprint. The University is also involved in WP5, focused on the transferability, replicability, and upscaling of project results, with the objective of promoting the adoption of developed solutions in different operational contexts. Project activities are developed through four European case studies. In this context, UNIVPM contributes particularly to the assessment of impacts and sustainability of the Italian case study, managed by Acquedotto del Fiora, supporting the analysis of environmental and energy performance of implemented solutions. UNIVPM also participates in defining methodological requirements for monitoring and evaluation, developing impact methodologies from technical, economic, social, and environmental perspectives, and defining the results exploitation strategy and business plan. \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tVALZEO | Valorization of agro-industrial waste to produce zeolite-based composite materials for environmental remediation and biodiesel production\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\tVALZEO was created to address the problem of accumulation and management of rice husk ash, an agro-industrial residue with low degradability that can generate significant environmental impacts. The project aims to transform these wastes into innovative composite materials based on hierarchical zeolites, modified with metal oxide nanoparticles and metal-organic framework materials, with a dual objective: removing contaminants from aqueous matrices and supporting catalytic biodiesel production. UNIVPM leads Work Package 3, dedicated to laboratory-scale validation of materials. Activities aim to evaluate the performance of developed materials both in water treatment, with removal of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, dyes, and microorganisms, and in biodiesel production. Beyond the scientific and technological dimension, the project also promotes researcher exchange among involved institutions, strengthening international and interdisciplinary cooperation among universities, research centers, and the private sector. \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFOLOU | Development of tools, methodologies, and shared registries to measure, monitor, and reduce food losses in the primary production phase\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\tFOLOU addresses the issue of food losses generated in the primary phase of food production, a phenomenon that produces negative effects on food security, the environment, and climate-altering emissions, in addition to exerting pressure on soil and water. The project addresses the main criticalities that currently limit the reduction of food losses: lack of harmonized measurement methodologies, shortage of economically sustainable tools, insufficient knowledge of factors generating losses, and need for training of involved parties. UNIVPM leads Work Package 1, dedicated to creating a robust and consolidated registry and repository on food losses in the primary production sector. The objective is twofold: on one hand, to develop the IT framework for the future National Food Losses Registry and the future European Food Losses Registry; on the other, to collect, analyze, and organize data available at European level to build a complete and accessible secondary source. FOLOU aims to systematize tools for understanding, measuring, training, and adoption, so as to promote concrete reduction of food losses and support producers, researchers, and policymakers with reliable and shared information bases. \t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\tWATERUN develops an innovative methodology to support the planning and implementation of urban water runoff management plans according to the Water-Sensitive Urban Design paradigm. The project proposes a holistic vision of diffuse pollution control in urban areas, from identification of sources to definition of preventive and mitigative measures, to decision support tools.\nUNIVPM contributes to the development and validation of three modeling tools aimed at improving urban runoff management: a tool to identify critical sources of diffuse pollution based on catchment connectivity, a planning tool for decentralized stormwater management at the urban block level, and a decision support system based on environmental and health risk assessment. In particular, UNIVPM leads the risk-based DSS and develops quantitative tools to assess runoff water quality from a health risk perspective, define any use restrictions, and verify the suitability of green infrastructures for different reuse scenarios. \n\t\t\t\t\t\tCIRCULAR BIOCARBON is a flagship biorefinery designed to valorize the organic fraction of municipal solid waste into high-value-added products, including advanced carbonaceous coatings, green graphene, biobased fertilizers, and bioplastics, in addition to various process intermediates. The project aims to demonstrate the industrial replicability of the model, managing the biorefinery for three years in Spain and Italy and developing business and exploitation strategies capable of promoting its market penetration. UNIVPM contributes to demonstrating the industrial feasibility of the SCHEPPAR system, a solution developed within the expertise of the WWEELab research group, coordinated by Prof. Fatone, integrated into a broader biorefinery model for valorization of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste and sewage sludge. The system will be scaled up to a 500 m\u00b3 fermenter and integrated into the anaerobic digestion section of Sesto San Giovanni, managed by CAP Holding. UNIVPM collaborates with the UNIVR team for process design, start-up, and valorization of experience gained in co-fermentation and design of demonstration and full-scale systems. \n\t\t\t\t\t\tSOLUCIR is a four-year European project that aims to accelerate the adoption of solutions for circular and decentralized water resource management, responding to growing pressures related to climate change, urban growth, and limitations of traditional infrastructures. The project develops an integrated approach based on advanced digital tools, including artificial intelligence, Digital Twin, and remote monitoring systems, to support the management of multi-source water systems through a shared operational vision (Common Operational Picture). It also introduces risk-based decision tools to support utilities and public decision-makers in the transition between centralized and decentralized systems, promoting flexible, resilient, and sustainable models. UNIVPM contributes to research and demonstration activities within the Pathfinding Studies and coordinates Work Package 1 (WP1), the core of the project, dedicated to collecting and analyzing IPL data through artificial intelligence tools, with the objective of providing operational insights to support all work packages through the SOLUCIR Integration Hub (SIH). \n\t\t\t\t\t\tSYSTEMICO is a Horizon Europe project that aims to develop and demonstrate new territorial models capable of integrating circular economy, decarbonization, and urban-industrial symbiosis through a systemic approach to resource management. The project involves 30 organizations from 10 European countries and implements four Holistic Regional Systems (HRS), pilot territories in which to experiment with innovative strategies to accelerate the transition toward climate-neutral and resilient regions. The Marche region represents one of the four European case studies, with a demonstrator developed in the Fermo area that integrates waste management, water treatment, resource recovery, renewable energy, and digitalization of environmental services. The project promotes cooperation among public entities, businesses, and research to valorize the leather, plastic, agri-food, and agriculture value chains through circular economy models, advanced digital tools, and new forms of territorial governance. UNIVPM coordinates the Marche demonstrator through the WWEELab research group, led by Prof. Francesco Fatone, developing methodologies for industrial symbiosis, circularity and sustainability indicators, environmental assessment models, and decision tools to support territorial policies. Activities are carried out in collaboration with Marche Region, ASITE, and FermoTech, transforming the Integrated Waste Management Center of Fermo into a European platform for testing innovative solutions oriented toward material and energy recovery, reduction of climate-altering emissions, and creation of new replicable models of sustainable development. \n\t\t\t\t\t\tN4EN develops innovative processes for nitrogen removal and excess sludge valorization with the objective of improving energy efficiency and circularity of wastewater treatment plants. The project aims to decouple the nitrogen cycle from the carbon cycle, promoting the recovery of organic matter present in wastewater as an energy and material resource. Coordinated by the University of Florence (UNIFI), with participation from the University of Naples Federico II (UNINA) and the Polytechnic University of Marche (UNIVPM), N4EN focuses on the development of advanced biological technologies for treating low C\/N ratio wastewater, based on innovative biofilm-based processes. In particular, the project studies granular partial nitritation\/anammox (PN\/A) systems in SBR reactors and attached biofilm processes in Moving Bed Biofilm Reactors (MBBR) for nitrogen removal via nitrite, integrating strategies for carbon recovery and excess sludge valorization. UNIVPM, through the WWEELab group, is responsible for assessing the environmental and energy sustainability of developed technologies, with activities dedicated to carbon footprint and climate-altering emissions analysis, LCA and MFA evaluation of new processes, and study of resource recovery scenarios from sludge and residual biomass.
