The approach transforms organic waste into high-value-added products for aquaculture, agriculture, cosmetics, and biobased material production, reducing dependence on virgin raw materials and minimizing emissions associated with waste management. UNIVPM contributes to the development and optimization of biological processes for the production of volatile fatty acids from organic waste, with subsequent valorization of the lipid fraction through oleaginous microbial biomass. Activities span laboratory scale and progressive scale-up toward pilot systems, with integration of advanced monitoring instrumentation for process control and performance validation. The project focuses its activities on the transfer and scaling of nutrient management strategies aimed at reducing soil pollution, limiting fertilizer use, and preventing, minimizing, and remediating contamination of freshwater and marine ecosystems. UNIVPM contributes to activities on the Italian case study of the Esino River, characterized by chemical and ecological criticalities due to combined sewer overflows and agricultural runoff. In collaboration with VIVA Servizi and with public and private territorial stakeholders, the University participates in testing a portfolio of solutions at the wastewater treatment plant level to improve pollutant removal and maximize water reuse for irrigation and fertigation. In this context, Nature-Based Solutions are integrated with renewable energy systems with the objective of achieving energy neutrality for the demonstrator. UNIVPM is the scientific coordinator of Pilot 2, dedicated to water reuse and nutrient recovery in the Marche region. The case study concerns the peri-urban area of the Municipality of San Benedetto del Tronto, a territory characterized by the presence of a nature reserve, agricultural and agro-industrial activities, urban uses, and strong seasonal pressures related to tourism. In this context, the project aims to build and support two value chains connected to water reuse and nutrient recovery, involving sectors such as water, agriculture, industry, energy, ecosystem services, and the urban-rural environment. The project focuses on hydroelectric energy generation by exploiting excess pressure occurring in urban water supply networks, transforming water into a renewable source capable of producing electricity without compromising service. UNIVPM is involved in several work packages and project activities. In particular, it contributes to WP4 dedicated to impact monitoring and indicator assessment, supporting the estimation of territorial effects of LIFE TURBINES solutions in terms of hydraulic and energy efficiency and carbon footprint. The University is also involved in WP5, focused on the transferability, replicability, and upscaling of project results, with the objective of promoting the adoption of developed solutions in different operational contexts. Project activities are developed through four European case studies. In this context, UNIVPM contributes particularly to the assessment of impacts and sustainability of the Italian case study, managed by Acquedotto del Fiora, supporting the analysis of environmental and energy performance of implemented solutions. The project aims to transform these wastes into innovative composite materials based on hierarchical zeolites, modified with metal oxide nanoparticles and metal-organic framework materials, with a dual objective: removing contaminants from aqueous matrices and supporting catalytic biodiesel production. UNIVPM leads Work Package 3, dedicated to laboratory-scale validation of materials. Activities aim to evaluate the performance of developed materials both in water treatment, with removal of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, dyes, and microorganisms, and in biodiesel production. Beyond the scientific and technological dimension, the project also promotes researcher exchange among involved institutions, strengthening international and interdisciplinary cooperation among universities, research centers, and the private sector. The project addresses the main criticalities that currently limit the reduction of food losses: lack of harmonized measurement methodologies, shortage of economically sustainable tools, insufficient knowledge of factors generating losses, and need for training of involved parties. UNIVPM leads Work Package 1, dedicated to creating a robust and consolidated registry and repository on food losses in the primary production sector. The project proposes a holistic vision of diffuse pollution control in urban areas, from identification of sources to definition of preventive and mitigative measures, to decision support tools.\nUNIVPM contributes to the development and validation of three modeling tools aimed at improving urban runoff management: a tool to identify critical sources of diffuse pollution based on catchment connectivity, a planning tool for decentralized stormwater management at the urban block level, and a decision support system based on environmental and health risk assessment. The project aims to demonstrate the industrial replicability of the model, managing the biorefinery for three years in Spain and Italy and developing business and exploitation strategies capable of promoting its market penetration. UNIVPM contributes to demonstrating the industrial feasibility of the SCHEPPAR system, a solution developed within the expertise of the WWEELab research group, coordinated by Prof. Fatone, integrated into a broader biorefinery model for valorization of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste and sewage sludge. The system will be scaled up to a 500 m\u00b3 fermenter and integrated into the anaerobic digestion section of Sesto San Giovanni, managed by CAP Holding. It also introduces risk-based decision tools to support utilities and public decision-makers in the transition between centralized and decentralized systems, promoting flexible, resilient, and sustainable models. UNIVPM contributes to research and demonstration activities within the Pathfinding Studies and coordinates Work Package 1 (WP1), the core of the project, dedicated to collecting and analyzing IPL data through artificial intelligence tools, with the objective of providing operational insights to support all work packages through the SOLUCIR Integration Hub (SIH). The project involves 30 organizations from 10 European countries and implements four Holistic Regional Systems (HRS), pilot territories in which to experiment with innovative strategies to accelerate the transition toward climate-neutral and resilient regions. The Marche region represents one of the four European case studies, with a demonstrator developed in the Fermo area that integrates waste management, water treatment, resource recovery, renewable energy, and digitalization of environmental services. The project promotes cooperation among public entities, businesses, and research to valorize the leather, plastic, agri-food, and agriculture value chains through circular economy models, advanced digital tools, and new forms of territorial governance. UNIVPM coordinates the Marche demonstrator through the WWEELab research group, led by Prof. Francesco Fatone, developing methodologies for industrial symbiosis, circularity and sustainability indicators, environmental assessment models, and decision tools to support territorial policies. The project aims to decouple the nitrogen cycle from the carbon cycle, promoting the recovery of organic matter present in wastewater as an energy and material resource. Coordinated by the University of Florence (UNIFI), with participation from the University of Naples Federico II (UNINA) and the Polytechnic University of Marche (UNIVPM), N4EN focuses on the development of advanced biological technologies for treating low C\/N ratio wastewater, based on innovative biofilm-based processes. In particular, the project studies granular partial nitritation\/anammox (PN\/A) systems in SBR reactors and attached biofilm processes in Moving Bed Biofilm Reactors (MBBR) for nitrogen removal via nitrite, integrating strategies for carbon recovery and excess sludge valorization. UNIVPM, through the WWEELab group, is responsible for assessing the environmental and energy sustainability of developed technologies, with activities dedicated to carbon footprint and climate-altering emissions analysis, LCA and MFA evaluation of new processes, and study of resource recovery scenarios from sludge and residual biomass. The project aims to promote the transition toward wastewater treatment plants conceived as true circular biorefineries, capable of reducing energy consumption, emissions, and sludge production, while promoting the recovery of nutrients, carbon, and value-added materials in line with European sustainability and circular bioeconomy objectives.
